Microsoft Edge Chromium is the default internet browser of Windows 10 and 11. Much faster, safer and more featured than Internet Explorer!
Edge is Microsoft’s latest web browser. Microsoft Edge, which is a part of the Windows 10 and Windows 11 operating system, takes its place as a modern web browser on Mac and Linux computers, iPhone and Android devices, and Xbox. Using the open source Chromium platform, Edge is the third most used browser in the world after Google Chrome and Apple Safari. Microsoft Edge Chromium is available for free download.
Microsoft Edge has replaced Internet Explorer (IE), the default browser for Windows, including laptops, smartphones, tablets, and hybrids. Windows 10 still includes Internet Explorer with backward compatibility but no icon; need to call. Internet Explorer is not available in Windows 11, Edge has compatibility mode if you need to see an old web page or web app that can be opened in Internet Explorer. Microsoft Edge is a universal Windows app, so you can download and update it from Microsoft Store on Windows.
Microsoft Edge is a web browser that offers faster load times, better support, and stronger security than Internet Explorer. Here are a few great features of the Edge browser;
Vertical tabs: Vertical tabs are a useful feature if you find yourself having dozens of tabs open at once. Instead of hovering or clicking to see which page you are on, you can easily find and manage your side tabs with one click. You’ll never lose or accidentally close tabs again. With the latest Microsoft Edge update you can now hide the horizontal title bar at the top of the screen so there is additional vertical space to work with. To enable this feature, go to Settings – Appearance – Customize Toolbar and select Hide Title Bar when in Vertical Tabs.
Tab groups: Microsoft Edge allows you to group related tabs so you can better organize your web browser and workspace. E.g; you can group all project related tabs together and assign another tab group for entertainment YouTube video watching. Using tab groups is as easy as right-clicking an open tab and choosing to add a tab to a new group. You can create a label and choose a color to define the tab group. Once the tab group is set, you can add tabs to the group by clicking and dragging.
Collections: Collections allow you to collect information from different sites, then organize, export, or return later. These can be difficult to do, especially if you’re working on several sites on multiple devices. To use this feature, simply click on the Collections button; A pane opens on the right side of your browser window. Here you can easily drag and drop web pages, text, images, videos and other items into a group and then export them to a Word document or Excel workbook.
Tracking prevention: Every time you visit a site, online trackers can collect information about your internet activity, the pages you visit, the links you click, your search history, and more. Companies then use the collected data to target you with personalized ads and experiences. The anti-tracking feature in Microsoft Edge is designed to prevent you from being tracked by sites you don’t directly access. It’s on by default and increases your online privacy by giving you control over the types of third-party trackers to be detected and blocked.
Password tracker: Millions of online personal identities are often exposed and sold on the dark web due to data breaches. Microsoft developed Password Monitor to protect your online accounts from hackers. When this feature is enabled, the browser notifies you if the credentials you have saved in autofill are on the dark web. It then prompts you to take action, lets you view a list of all the leaked credentials, and then directs you to the relevant site to change your password.
Immersive reader: Immersive Reader built into the new Microsoft Edge makes reading online easier and more accessible by eliminating page distractions and creating a simplified environment that helps you stay focused. This feature also gives you access to various features such as hearing text read aloud or adjusting the text size.
Easy migration: Microsoft Edge is available for download for Windows, Mac, iOS and Android. What’s nice is that you can easily copy or move your bookmarks, form-fills, passwords, and basic settings to Microsoft Edge with one click.
If you want to switch to the new Microsoft Edge browser, you need to download it. (It can also be downloaded from the Windows 11 Store.)
Keeping Bing as the default search engine in the new Microsoft Edge provides an enhanced search experience, including direct links to Windows 10 apps, recommendations about the organization if you’re signed in with a work or school account, and answers to instant questions about Windows 10. However, in Microsoft Edge, you can change the default search engine to any site that uses OpenSearch technology. To change the search engine in Microsoft Edge, follow these steps:
Do a search in the address bar using the search engine you want to set as the default in Microsoft Edge.
To add a different search engine, do a search in the address bar using that search engine (or a website that supports search, such as a wiki site). Then go to Settings and more – Settings – Privacy and services – Address bar. The engine or website you used to search will now appear in the list of options you can choose from.
By default, Microsoft Edge updates automatically when you restart your browser.
Once Update: In the browser go to Settings and more – Help and feedback – About Microsoft Edge (edge://settings/help). If the About page shows that Microsoft Edge is up to date, you don’t need to do anything. If the About page shows an update is available, select “Download and install to continue”. Microsoft Edge will download the update and the next time you reboot, the update will be installed. If the About page shows “Restart Microsoft Edge to finish updating”, select Restart. The update has already been downloaded so all you have to do is restart the browser for it to install.
Always Keep Up-to-Date: It is recommended that you always keep your browser up-to-date to ensure its safety and proper functioning. In the browser go to Settings – more – About Microsoft Edge (edge://settings/help). Depending on where you purchased your device, you may see one or both: “Download and install updates automatically.” “Download updates over metered connections.” Turn on any available toggles to always allow updates to download automatically.
Many Windows 10 users want to know how to uninstall Microsoft Edge. The renewed Chromium version of the browser is much superior to the previous one, and although Chrome is a rival to Firefox, users do not like Microsoft’s push. Edge is fully integrated with Windows and cannot be uninstalled like Internet Explorer in older versions of Windows. Even if you set Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Vivaldi or another browser as your default browser, Edge automatically opens when you perform certain actions.
If you downloaded Microsoft Edge manually instead of automatically installing it via Windows Update, you can uninstall the browser using the following simple method:
Open the Windows 10 Settings app by clicking the start button and selecting the gear icon. When the Settings window opens, click on Applications.
In the Apps and Features window, go to Microsoft Edge. Select the item and click the Remove button. If this button is gray, you will need to use the alternative method.
You can forcefully remove Edge from Windows 10 via command prompt using the commands below. But first you need to find out which version of Edge is installed on the computer.
Open Edge and click the three-line button in the upper right corner of the browser. Select “Help and feedback” then “About Microsoft Edge”. Note the version number below the browser name at the top of the page or copy and paste it for reference.
Then open Command Prompt as Administrator. To do this, type “cmd” in the Windows search box and select “Run as administrator” next to Command Prompt at the top of the results list.
When Command Prompt opens, type the following command: “cd %PROGRAMFILES(X86)%\Microsoft\Edge\Application\xxx\Installer”. Replace xxx with the Edge version number. Press Enter and Command Prompt will switch to Edge’s installer folder.
Now enter the command: “setup.exe –uninstall –system-level –verbose-logging –force-uninstall” Press Enter and Edge will be instantly removed from Windows 10 without restarting your computer. The browser’s shortcut icon will disappear from your taskbar, but you may see an Edge entry in the Start menu; when clicked it does nothing.
